We believe a size inclusive health model can have a lasting impact.
Health at Every Size
We approach treatment with a Health at Every Size model. HAES® is an evidenced-based, size-affirmative, weight-neutral approach to health and acceptance for all.
Health at Every Size® (HAES) is an inclusive, compassionate approach that supports body acceptance and overall well-being, rather than focusing on weight loss or achieving a specific Body Mass Index (BMI). Rooted in the work of the Association for Size Diversity and Health, the HAES framework is guided by five core principles:
Weight Inclusivity: Respecting and valuing body diversity, while rejecting the belief that a person’s worth or health is determined by their size or weight.
Health Enhancement: Supporting practices that nurture emotional, physical, social, and spiritual well-being.
Respectful Care: Recognizing and challenging weight stigma, bias, and discrimination in healthcare and society.
Eating for Well-being: Encouraging flexible, intuitive eating based on hunger, fullness, satisfaction, and enjoyment, rather than restrictive dieting.
Life-Enhancing Movement: Promoting joyful, sustainable movement that supports overall wellness and feels good in your body, rather than exercise focused solely on burning calories.
Size Inclusive Health
Size-inclusive health, often rooted in the Health at Every Size® (HAES®) framework, is an approach that emphasizes overall well-being and equitable healthcare for people of all body sizes. Rather than focusing on weight loss or Body Mass Index (BMI), this perspective centers on sustainable health behaviors, body respect, and compassionate care.
This approach also challenges harmful aspects of diet culture and recognizes that health cannot be determined by weight alone. Core principles of a weight-inclusive approach include:
Equal Access to Care: Everyone deserves respectful, evidence-based healthcare without assumptions being made about their health based solely on body size.
Reducing Weight Stigma: Weight bias in healthcare and society can prevent individuals from seeking care and negatively impact both physical and emotional health.
Weight-Neutral Treatment: Care focuses on symptoms, lab work, behaviors, and overall wellness rather than prescribing weight loss as the primary solution.
Intuitive Eating & Joyful Movement: Encouraging a balanced relationship with food and movement that is guided by internal cues, enjoyment, and sustainability rather than calorie control.
Holistic Well-Being: Recognizing that emotional, mental, social, and physical health are deeply interconnected, and that chronic stress related to stigma and discrimination can affect overall health.
